去過美國的人可能會發現，在美國很容易見到美國國旗，無論是在百貨公司、飯店、餐廳、甚至是球場都可以看到星條旗在空中飛揚。直到今日我還是很驚訝，美國人竟然如此的熱愛自己的國家。之後聽到了Lee Greenwood 所寫的 God Bless The U.S.A 感觸很深。以下是歌詞

And I had to start again with just my children and my wife.
I’d thank my lucky stars to be living here today,
‘Cause the flag still stands for freedom and they can’t take that away.

大家注意到了紅字的部份嗎？身為台灣人，有誰能像這首歌一樣大聲的說出 I'm proud to be a Taiwanese？ 記得在Baruch College 的 Final Exam, Kai 告訴我他們今天的期末考作文題目是" Do you proud of your country? why or why not? "老實說，第一時間我聽到這個題目我愣住了。身為一個台灣人，我實在是想不出身為一個台灣人我們有什麼值得驕傲的。 Kai 告訴我，他認為這個題目對他來說相當困難。同樣身為台灣人，我們的國家無法讓我們感到驕傲。Kai 跟我說，他問了同樣應考這份essay 的韓國人和日本人。 他們都能立即得說出他們以身為韓國人或是日本人為榮以及各自讓他們引以為傲的的理由。最後Kai 跟我說，台灣讓他感到驕傲的有龐大的電子代工業、以及我們民主的成就…但是這樣就能讓我們 proud of our country 嗎？然後我發現一件事情，在台灣我們鮮少會在路上看到國旗，更不要說公開場合還有人唱國歌了。在美國，可以看到家家戶戶插著飛揚的星條旗有些家庭甚至有旗杆每日升起美國國旗。難道台灣人都不愛國嗎？說穿了是我們對我們的國家感到自卑。台灣自有歷史以來就沒有自己的國家，從荷蘭東印度公司統治到明末清初鄭成功變帶著他的海盜部下們飄揚過海到清朝統治的200多年以及作為日本殖民時期，最後一個在大陸失去江山的人帶著殘軍來統治台灣。最近的新聞，美國國務院認為無論是『中華民國』還是『台灣』都從來不是一個國家。這下好了，原來過了400多年我們對國際社會來說還不算是一個國家。這無疑是戳破我們美夢的泡沫。然後，在國內無分朝野就有如過度驚嚇而發狂的狗般開始罵美國背叛台灣、如何如何…。 但是無論如何，這是一個事實，我們還不算一個真正的國家。然後我聽到了 God Bless The USA 這首歌，其中個一段歌詞讓我感觸良多

‘Cause there ain’t no doubt I love this land God bless the U.S.A. 從這段歌詞我們可以看到美國人不但以身為美國人為榮，還不忘懷念那些替美國爭取自由民主的人，保護美國免於被其他國家侵略; 最後也最重要的歌詞中的 " I love this land " 在台灣喊得震天響的" 愛台灣 "究竟有誰是像歌詞上所寫的這樣愛台灣呢？這些最基本的差異讓美國這個國家成為世界第一強國，而台灣則還以為自己是個國家實際上是不倫不類的一個『區域』，甚至只是個地理名詞。 不知道何時 Can we proud of our country? 希望有一天能在國外聽到台灣人驕傲的說出 I'm Taiwanese, I'm proud of my country. 最後， God bless Taiwan.
